Legislative Timeline (2025–2026)

In the 9th Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has transitioned to leading the Minority Caucus, where his legislative focus has shifted toward constitutional oversight and economic critique.
- January 2025: Formally transitioned from Majority Leader to Minority Leader following the 9th Parliament’s inauguration.
- February 2025: Led a request for urgent state support to contain a cholera outbreak in the Effutu Municipality.
- March 2025: Successfully pushed for the abolition of certain taxes, including the 1.5% withholding tax on unprocessed gold for small-scale miners and the 10% betting tax, as part of the Minority’s relief agenda.
- June 2025: Strongly criticized the Majority for prioritizing “democratic convenience” over constitutional interests, arguing that legislative decisions were undermining fundamental governance principles.
- October 2025: Raised concerns that the Majority was stalling on the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025 (the “Anti-LGBT bill”) after it was removed from the daily agenda.
- November 2025: Led the debate against the 2026 Budget Statement, labelling it a “cut-and-paste” document and accusing the government of “surrendering to galamsey” (illegal mining) through its GoldBod program.
- December 2025: Highlighted discrepancies in 2026 capital expenditure reports, noting that actual spending exceeded approved amounts by millions, and called for legal accountability.
“The Effutu Dream” Projects
Launched in early 2020 and significantly expanded by 2026, “The Effutu Dream” is Afenyo-Markin’s blueprint for branding Winneba as a leading destination for tourism, investment, and quality living.

In May 2025, at Gyengyenadze, to reduce travel time for residents seeking judicial services.
- Health & Infrastructure:
- Constructed a specialised Children’s Hospital at Gyengyenadze (reached 65% completion in late 2025).
- Built and handed over clinics in Akosua Village, Woarabeba, and Kojo Beedu.

- Established 14 community libraries across the constituency to foster a reading culture.
- Extended the “One Teacher, One Laptop” initiative, providing over 1,000 laptops to both private and public school teachers.

- Completed 50 affordable housing units (1, 2, and 3-bedroom) in Gyengyenadze to attract professionals and public officers to the municipality.
